Family Centre Awards

Summer 2017-6A number of different young people were presented with special awards by Trustees of the Westbourne Park Family Centre for the numerous different and special ways each has contributed and participated in activities over the past year – including our holiday clubs, Friday evening Club Xpress and Youth Clubs, Wednesday football etc.

The young people were excited to receive their awards and their parents were proud of the recognition given to their children’s achievements.

St. Stephen’s Church is a sponsor of the Westbourne Park Family Centre – and at present a number of the activities are hosted at St. Stephen’s School. This is a wonderful example of how the Christian community works together in effective partnerships in our ministry across Westbourne Park.

Praying for the Victims of Grenfell Tower

Summer 2017-1Both the school and church communities at St. Stephen’s have responded to the tragedy at Grenfell Tower by creating prayer spaces to pray for all those caught up in the disaster.

In particular we have been praying for Hanan Wahabi  – a much-valued member of staff and Governor at the school – and her family who lived in Grenfell Tower but managed to escape. Tragically they had close relatives who died in the fire.

St. Stephen’s has also sought to help through volunteering, giving support to local residents, and by financial donation.

We continue to pray for all those affected – the grieving; those made homeless; local residents and neighbourhood groups; members of the emergency services; and all professional and government authorities seeking to help.

Easter Celebrations

Easter Day collage

On Easter Sunday, at our all-age family communion, about 150 children and adults gathered at St. Stephen’s to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus and his victory over sin and evil. We rejoiced in the good news that the wall of sin that separates us from God has been broken down decisively by the cross and replaced by the joy, hope and new life of the resurrection.

All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.
It is by his great mercy that we have been born again,
because God raised Jesus Christ from the dead.
Now we live with great expectation….

Celebrating our Heritage Lottery Fund Grant

english_landscape_blackWe are delighted to announce that the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) has awarded St. Stephen’s a substantial grant to undertake essential structural repairs. We have received an initial award of £36,000 for the development stage, and on successful completion (of which we are extremely confident), a further £215,500 will be awarded. In addition to the HLF grant, a further £112,00 has been raised from church reserves, donations from the congregation, further grants and support from the Hereford Road Association. This takes us a long way towards our total project budget of £450,000.

Since 2004 the Parochial Church Council of St. Stephen’s have been faced with growing structural problems within our buildings. This has required extensive investigations and costly remedial repairs. It became apparent that a long-term solution was required. The scale of the problems and the necessity of a planned intervention has been acknowledged and supported by Historic England who in 2014  placed St. Stephen’s on their Heritage at Risk Register as a Category A priority.

In response to this huge challenge, we have worked with our architect and structural engineers, to develop a plan to secure and preserve the structural integrity of our Grade II listed building.

The HLF grant and other monies raised means we can now move towards implementing those plans hopefully in 2016.

If you would like to know more please come to our Open Meeting at 7pm on Monday, 30th November.
